Following Aena's policy of ensuring that adequate attention is given to accessibility requirements and support for the disabled, Madrid-Barajas airport endeavours to make its facilities accessible for people with disabilities. The works carried out in T4 have taken into account the advice from experts and institutions for the disabled (members of Spanish Comitte of Representatives of Disabled Persons) in order to ensure easy access to the facilities.
Another of the specific actions carried out at Madrid-Barajas airport has been a personalised support service for visually impaired passengers, which provides flight status information via mobile telephone messaging. The system works as follows:
Passengers must request the service, either before arrival at the airport or when checking in for their flights. Airport personnel will offer the available alternatives for the service, by telephone and at the check-in desk. Passengers can choose to receive the notifications by mobile phone, either their own or one provided by the airport, or through personalised messages over the general PA system in the boarding area (this last option is a temporary measure until such time as the mobile phone procedure comes into general use). The messages received will inform passengers of the status of their flights (when boarding starts, last call, changes or allocation of boarding gate, as appropriate)
