Along with terminal improvements, a new terminal roadway system has been built to improve traffic flow. Schoephoester Road has become one way heading eastbound in front of the Airport and parking garage. Traffic heading West from Route 75 to Schoephoester Road toward the Airport will be redirected to flow onto the roadway in front of the terminals. The improvements will not affect travelers entering the Airport from the eastbound lane of Schoephoester Road from the Route 20 Bradley Connector and will not affect access to businesses East of the Airport on Schoephoester Road and Route 75.
New Terminal and Concourse
The new Bradley International Airport terminal is now open for business! The Airport now provides a modern facility sized to handle current and future scheduled passenger service.
The new terminal and concourse structure totals 260,000 square feet. The modernized terminal is connected to existing Terminal A to create a single complex east of the Sheraton Hotel. Passengers are processed through a single security checkpoint located in the center of the terminal, and all concessions, with the possible exception of a few kiosks, are located beyond the security checkpoint.
The new concourse provides 12 aircraft gate positions with passenger jet bridges. Airline operations and maintenance areas are located on the lower level. Airlines relocated at the new gates are Southwest, Continental, Northwest Airlines and Delta Airlines.
The main floor, or departure level, includes airline ticket counters and waiting areas, an extensive concession area facing the aircraft parking apron, restroom facilities and other passenger amenities. The ticketing and concession lobbies feature spacious high ceilings and glass facades, offering dramatic views of the aircraft parking areas and the airfield beyond. The lower level, or arrival area, includes a passenger baggage claim area with four baggage carousels, a ground transportation area, various aviation-related kiosks and the airline baggage makeup areas. The new terminal and concourse includes state-of-the art security and communications systems, featuring a unified flight and baggage information display system.
Bradley is also in the process of completing additional major renovations that are part of the $200 million airport modernization, which began in April 2000. Included in these renovations are:
- The existing terminal's roof will be raised to create a uniform look.
- A sit-down restaurant and retail stores will be constructed.
- The escalator in the existing terminal will be eliminated and the area filled in to provide continuous ticket counter and office space for airlines utilizing Gates 20-30.
- The baggage system will be revamped in order to install EDS machines, and begin 100 percent baggage screening.
- The expansion work at the end of the existing concourse will be completed in late fall 2003, at which time the final phase of airport renovations will be started. The final phase consists of renovations to Gates 20-28. American Airlines will occupy Gates 22, 24, 26 and 28, with Air Canada Jazz occupying Gate 20.
