Freetown - introduction

Freetown is the capital city of Sierra Leone, a country on the West Coast of Africa. The city is home to 1.2 million people and is a vivid mixture of all of the country's ethnic groups. It is also the country's center of economy, finance and culture as well as an important regional hub. It also serves as a major port city on the Atlantic Ocean. The city lies on a peninsula, stretched along the estuary of the Sierra Leone River, and nestled at the foot of the mountains.

Freetown has a rich history. It was founded originally as a stopover for merchants. Later, however, it gained a darker face as a major slave trade center in 16th century. Freetown was founded in 1792 by Lieutenant John Clarkson and freed American slaves, and was the first capital to be established as such.

Today the city features numerous interesting historical landmarks, the most important being the the famous Cotton tree, a city symbol since its foundation in 1792. The city is also home to Fourah Bay College, which was founded already in 1827, making it the oldest university in West Africa. However, Freetown's main attractions are the beautiful beaches nearby, including Lumley beach, Lakka beach, No. 2 River beach and Toke beach. There visitors can enjoy diving, surfing, swimming and fishing.
