Surabaya - introduction

Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia and home to 2.7 million people. It is located in East Java, on the north shore of the island, where the river Mas flows into the Madura Strait.

The city was founded in 1293 and served as a trading port for the inland empires of Java. The city name derives from the Javanese words Suro meaning shark, and Boyo for crocodile, and according to a local myth the two creatures battled for the title of the strongest animal. Now both animals are represented in the city logo.

The city is primarily a business destination and gateway to Mount Bromo and also serves the boat transfer traffic to Bali or Sulawesi.

Nevertheless Surabaya has several attractions for the visitor, such as the Zoo, the old town, Chinatown, and Pasar Pabean market, located in the heart of the Muslim quarter that also contains the mosque and bazaar. Great shops can also be found in the modern part of the city. Clustered around Tunjungan Plaza are night clubs and restaurants that give this lively city a vibrant nightlife.
